e are approaching the time of year where members can volunteer to run for the 2017 WSPA Board and help launch our 70th Platinum Anniversary year. One of the recent developments in the WSPA governance has been the ability for members in any location in the state to participate on the Board. The board meets once a month via video conferencing. The first meeting in January is in person in the Seattle area and the number of additional in-person meetings is determined at that meeting. Video conferencing allows for qualified members from any part of the state to sit on the board. For in person meetings, WSPA pays the travel costs (flight or mileage) for board members outside of greater Seattle. The bylaws allow for a maximum of 7 members and five positions are open with a minimum of three positions needing to be filled and voted on in December. Unfilled seats can be appointed by the board during the year. Board members can serve two two-year terms. It is vitally important to have a diversity of voices and representation. It has been a great learning experience, a good way to network with psychologists throughout the state, and personally rewarding.
Board members are responsible for setting goals and being financial stewards of the association, and have the opportunity to represent Washington State at APA’s renamed Practice Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. and further WSPA’s influence on state mental health legislation and corporate policies that affect the practice of psychology. Returning board members are President Elect Sonia Venkatraman and Secretary Andrea Pascarelli. Board president Bill Thorbecke, Treasurer Russell Hanford, and member Joanna Patten term off this year. Michael Badger will not be able to fulfill his first term due to health reasons.
