I am a psychologist, because…

By: Dominika Breedlove, Psy.D. President

Dear Colleagues,

I hope the subject line got your attention and maybe even intrigued you somewhat? “I am a psychologist, because…” is the name of WSPA’S new, evolving membership recruitment campaign. Please keep reading to learn more details about it later in this post.

On May 15, 2019 I reached to you on behalf of the Board of Trustees with the proposal to expand the Board by two additional members, and to extend each term to three years. I am pleased to let you know that your comments were unanimously supportive of the expansion. We needed 40 member votes in support of the amendment, but we received 64 votes by the conclusion of the voting period, all of them “Yes” votes supporting the proposed amendment to our bylaws. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, THANK YOU to all of you who took the time to read my announcement, contribute your feedback, and/or cast your vote of support!

You might be wondering what comes next? Now that the Board was expanded, we are excited to start recruitment for our vacant seats. Your Board is fully staffed currently with six members, which leaves us open to recruit for up to three additional members. We are planning for one of those vacant seats to be filled with a graduate student, who would also become a WSPA Graduate Student Association (WSPAGS) Chair. Although that position has been dormant for several years, the Board committee designated for this task is currently scheduling outreach meetings with psychology students and trainees across the state.  As we connect with our students, interns, and fellows, we will actively recruit for the Chair position, who would also become a voting member of the Board.

Are you, or someone you know interested in joining the Board of Trustees? The Board has worked over the past few months to standardize our Board recruitment process. If you would like to learn more information about serving on the Board, please read the Board Member Expectations and Board Member Recruitment & Election process documents. If you’re not quite ready to make the commitment to the Board, but you would like to contribute in another way, please consider joining one of our committees. The Continuing Education Committee, Legislative Advocacy Committee, and the Graduate Student Association are especially looking for new members. Please visit our website to learn about our committees.

If you are interested in serving on the Board or joining one of our committees, please contact our Executive Director, Marvo Reguindin at executive@wspapsych.org.

Finally, we are excited to share with you the idea that was born out of our 2019 summer Board retreat, which took place in Chelan on June 15.  During the retreat we brainstormed some creatve ideas about how to grow our membership ranks and get more people involved in carrying out (and perhaps redefining) the mission and vision of our association. That’s when “I am a psychologist, because…” campaign was created. Why did YOU become a psychologist? Many of you likely considered other career paths within healthcare, including other mental health professions, or other career paths entirely. Within the dynamic, rapidly changing professional environment you might be finding yourself in, there are unique challenges as well as opportunities that we face as a profession. How do we better work together to preserve our “why” that’s unique to psychology? We look forward to bringing you more details as this campaign grows. Of course, if you’re interested in joining our Membership Committee to have a more active voice in these efforts, please let us know.

Thank you again for your vote of support on expanding the Board, and we hope you continue to dialogue and work with us even more closely going forward.

With Appreciation,

Dominika Breedlove, Psy.D.
President, WSPA Board
